After a price hike in January, panel makers are raising prices another $3 on average in the first half of February. The price increase could be quite significant--more than $5 for some sizes/customers with lower price points. Currently, the demand for LCD TVs remain firm especially for 32"W and smaller sizes, and that application shares capacity with monitor panels. Due to concerns about panel allocation and plans for aggressive shipments in Q1'10, the demand for monitor panels is higher-than-expected, which also contributes to the tight supply. The supply side issues include fewer working days in February, a risk of labor shortage, and constraints on some components like glass substrate, polarizers and ICs. Another hike is expected in February.

As the new Intel CPU Calpella and Pine Trail-M platform are introduced this quarter, we expect the Q1'10 notebook PC shipments will be down only 6% Q/Q but will be up 45% Y/Y. Panel makers are intending to raise the price more than $2 this month because they are seeing component constraints and labor issues in China. For the first half, the panel price will be increased by $1, and for the second half, prices will be raised another $1. |

TV brands are continuing to stock more panels for Q1, especially since demand from China TV brands remains firm. The exception is larger sizes, which are well stocked in the market. In the first half of February, panel makers are keeping TV panel prices flat overall, but some are increasing the price of 32"W panels. The demand growth of larger sizes, however, is slowing and creating some price pressure. Sell-through in the coming Chinese New Year holidays will be a critical indicator. |
