Analysis from DisplaySearch’s Quarterly Large-Area TFT LCD Shipment Report reveals that over-shipment of large-area LCD panels in Q2’08 due to an overly optimistic outlook for 2008 was the main factor contributing to the rapid and significant panel price reductions seen in the panel supply chain beginning in June. The survey indicates that Q2’08 shipments of large-area TFT LCD panels grew 6% Q/Q and 23% Y/Y to 117.9M units, the largest number of large-area panels ever shipped in a quarter. This stuffing of the supply chain and prior overzealous production plans required downstream panel customers to rapidly revise their demand forecast at the end of Q2’08; the top priority became the adjustment of on-hand inventory vs. increased production. Such mid-year inventory control measures caused a rapid reduction in panel prices beginning in June when panel producers sought to entice additional orders from brands, who already had sufficient supplies on hand.
Other significant developments reported in the survey are
- Notebook PC panel shipment reached a historical high of 37.2 million in Q2’08 up 13% Q/Q and 37% Y/Y. 15.4”W remains over 50% of the Notebook PC panels shipped; however the new 16:9 panels, including 15.6”W, 16”W, 16.4”W, and 18.4”W, have reached a 3% share in Q2’08, up from just 1% in Q1’08.
- LCD monitor panel shipment reached 52.5 million in Q2’08 up 6% Q/Q and 13% Y/Y. LCD monitor panel shipment isn’t just for the LCD monitor end-market, with growing use of LCD monitor panels in pure LCD TVs, especially in the 19”W category. With this trend in mind, 19”W and 17” SXGA remain the two largest segments for actual LCD monitor panel shipment with 28% and 16% shares, respectively. However, the new 16:9 panels, including 15.0”W, 15.6”W, 17.0”W, 18.5”W, 21.5”W and 24.0”W, doubled their share to 6.6% in Q2’08, up from just 3.0% in Q1’08.
- LCD TV panels reached 25 million units in Q2’08, almost flat from Q1’08 but up 27% Y/Y. Full HD continues its strong market penetration and reached 29% of all LCD TV panel shipments in Q2’08, up from 23% in Q1’08. For 40” and above, the FHD share was 73%, up from 64% in Q1’08. Meanwhile, FHD grew strongly in 32”, reaching shipments of 580K, compared to 500K in Q1’08.
- LCD TV panels of 40” and above accounted for 31% of the total in Q1’08, compared to 27% in Q1’08. 32” accounted for 39% of total LCD TV panels shipped in Q2’08, a slight decline from 41% in Q1’08.
- On a unit basis, Samsung remained the shipment leader in large-area TFT LCD with 21.7% market share, a slight increase from 20.5% in Q1’08. Just behind Samsung for the quarter were LG Display with a 20.0% share and AUO with an 18.5% share. AUO’s unit shipment share fell below 20% for the first time in seven quarters. CMO ranked #4 with 15.8% in Q2’08, followed by CPT with a market share of 5.9%.
- On a unit basis, the top five large-area LCD panel makers accounted for 81.9% of the units shipped in Q2’08, a small increase from 80.7% in Q1’08.

In terms of revenues, global large-area TFT LCD panel revenues grew 1% Q/Q and 30% Y/Y, reaching US$21.1 million. Samsung led Q2’08 revenues with a 25.2% market share, followed by LG Display at 18.8% and AUO at 17.6%. Samsung grew their revenue share, from 23.6% in Q1’08, as LG Display fell slightly from 19.4% in Q1’08, and AUO dropped from 19.3% in Q1’08. CMO ranked #4 with 15.2% of revenue share, and Sharp ranked #5 with 7.6% share. These top five companies accounted for 84.5% of total revenues in Q2’08, a slight increase from 83.6% in Q1’08.
“Prior forecast for Q2’08 large-area TFT LCD panel shipments were for sequential shipment growth of 5%. Growth in end-market demand exceeded this, however, due in part to the strong pull by downstream customers. The strong demand placed on large-area LCD panel producers created a panel inventory pile-up at the brand and system integration level, which is believed to be the main reason for rapid downward panel price adjustments from the middle of June. Since then, the lack of new orders from brands caused the panel inventory pile up in panel makers’ warehouses,” noted David Hsieh, DisplaySearch Vice President of Greater China and lead analyst for large-area panels. “We expect Q3’08 will be a critical time for the whole supply chain to adjust inventories. As long as the industry is able to clear up this potentially short-term inventory problem through production control and reduced pricing, we remain optimistic for the Q4’08 outlook and possible panel price stability at the end of Q3’08 due to the seemingly healthy end-market demand as the market heads into its most robust season.”
