If there are any concerns in the LCD panel industry about sales holding up in economically uncertain times, industry executives may rest a bit easier after reading the results of DisplaySearch’s large-area TFT LCD survey for Q1'08 in the company’s latest Quarterly Large-Area TFT LCD Shipment Report. The survey indicates shipments of TV panels grew 69% Y/Y to 25.1M units. That represents an expected seasonal decline of 11% Q/Q.
Among the other significant developments reported in the survey are
- Full HD continues its strong market penetration and is expanding to smaller panel sizes. FHD reached 24% of all LCD TV panel shipments in Q1’08, up from 22% in Q4’07. For 40” and above, the FHD share was 64%, unchanged from Q4’07. But FHD grew strongly in 32”, reaching shipments of over 500K.
- In a possible indication of a move to smaller TV screen sizes, LCD TV panels 40” and above accounted for 28% of the total in Q1’08, a slight decline from 29% in Q4’07. 32” LCD TV panels had a share of more than 40% of total LCD TV panels shipped for the first time.
- 15.4” LCDs accounted for a record 53% of total notebook PC panels shipped in a quarter, followed by 14.1” with 24%.
- The 49.7M LCD monitor panels shipped in the quarter included 2.8M units to be used for LCD TVs with smaller screens, such as 19”W and 22”W.
- Samsung overtook AUO as the market leader in LCD TFT unit shipments with 20.5% market share.
The Survey Results in Greater Depth
In shipments for the other major large-area applications, LCD monitor panel shipments reached 49.7 M units, growing 29% Y/Y and 1% Q/Q. Notebook PC panels reached 33M units, growing 44% Y/Y and 2% Q/Q. Table 1 shows the latest results of the DisplaySearch Q1’08 global large area TFT LCD shipments survey.

In terms of revenues, the Global large-area TFT LCD panel shipments grew 61% Y/Y reaching US$20.9 billion but declined 9% Q/Q. Samsung led the Q1’08 revenues with a 23.6% market share, followed by LG Display at 19.5% and AUO at 19.2%. Samsung grew their revenue share to 23.6% in Q1’08 from 23.4% in Q4’07, as LG Display fell slightly from 19.7% in Q4’07 to 19.5% in Q1’08 and AUO dropped from 19.7% in Q4’07 to 19.2% in Q1’08. CMO ranked #4 with 13.5% of market share and Sharp ranked #5 with 7.7% share of total revenues. These top 5 companies accounted for 83.6% of total revenues in Q1’08, slightly increasing from 83.3% in Q4’07.
In terms of units, Samsung took the crown from last quarter’s champion AUO with Q1’08 large area TFT LCD shipments of 22.9M units and a 20.5% share, followed by AUO with 22.3M units and a 20% share. The No.3 unit supplier in Q1’08 was LG Display with 22.1M units and 19.8% share, followed by CMO with 15.7M units and 14% share. The No.5 was CPT with 6.2% share. The top five makers accounted for 80.6% of the units shipped in Q1’08, which remained unchanged from Q4’07.
“The TV panel shipment decline in Q1’08 reflects the seasonal adjustment of the LCD TV panel demand, but it is influenced by the global macroeconomics slowness. However, the steady shipment of LCD monitor and notebook PC panels in Q1’08 shows the healthy demand for IT products, especially from developing countries,” noted David Hsieh, DisplaySearch’s Vice President of Greater China and lead analyst for large-area panels. “We expect Q2’08 large-area TFT LCD shipments will grow by more than 5%, given the strong momentum in LCD monitor and notebook panels. LCD TV panel price reductions that are beginning this month and panel inventory build-up plans of top tier LCD TV brands will also drive continuous increases in the shipments of LCD TV panels,” he added.
By application, CMO led in LCD monitor panels shipments with 8.46M units in Q1’08, LG Display led in notebook PC shipments with 9.96M units, and AUO led in both LCD TV panel shipments with 5.6M units and other applications with 1.2M shipped units. CMO is also the leader for LCD monitor panels used in LCD TVs with 1.1M units shipped in Q1’08. Table 2 lists the large-area TFT LCD shipment leaders in each category.
